About Avra Alexiades, BFA/MA

Born and brought up in a Chicago suburb. She has a Master's degree in Art and has devoted much of her life studying anatomy and the human figure. Her most notable teachers were Richard Diebenkorn (UCLA) and Joyce Trieman (Cal at Northridge).

Her two most recent themes are on Rodeo Drive Windows and the Pacific ocean, most notably in San Diego where she now lives. These paintings depict the movement of water and the effect of light upon the surface of water.

The Rodeo Drive Series began 5 years ago in a light hearted attempt to portray women. It soon evolved into a more serious attempt to describe how women were viewed. They were deliberately painted without heads and sometimes without the back of the heads. The crimson and orange backgrounds were purely visceral.

"I sometimes don't understand the paintings myself, but it doesn't seem to matter; it only matters that I paint them, as a sum of my life's experiences."
